Step 4 Reading for understanding the sentences

Let Ss explain the sentences in English in a group of four.

1. It was exactly like your necklace, but it was a different one.

2. It was worth five hundred francs at most.

3. I’ve written to accept the invitation.

Step 5 Language points

Explain the language points in the text. ( I think it is better to explain the language after the understanding of the text so the students will get a whole story.)

1.after all的含义

①In my opinion, we should not punish him. After all, he is a child of seven years old.

②Why don't you ask for her help? After all, she is always ready to help others.

①The young man was badly hurt, but he is now much better after all.

② They said they would not come back for lunch, but they came back after all.

2.at the most 意为“最多、至多”,其反义词组 at least 意为“至少、最少”。例如:

①I thought that he had died at least twenty years ago.

②This computer is at the most worth 1,000 dollars.

3.be lost

①We couldn't find the necklace; it was lost。

②I can't find my way back to the hotel. I'm lost.

The pen was lost yesterday

【注】be lost in thought 是“陷入沉思”的意思。be lost in the book

4.day and night(或 night and day)意为“日日夜夜”、“整天整夜”(all the time),作时间状语。例如:

①Lao Li thinks about his wife and children day and night.

②They have to work night and day, but they get little money.

5.not…any more意为“不再”,用于否定句。例如:

①I don't live there any more.

②Don't make the mad experiment any more.

③He can't go to school any more because he got a serious disease.

6.on the way to (a place)

①They are on the way to Guangdong Province.

②On my/the way to school I usually pays visit to an old lady.

[注意] way后面to接的是名词,当way后面接的是副词home,here或there时,则不用to。例如:

①On the way there I often met a blind man with a stick in his right hand.

另外, on the way to还有“即将”的含义;其中 to为介词,后跟动词-ing形式。例如:

①The students in Teacher's College have been on the way to becoming teachers.

7.be worth

①The necklace was worth 500 francs at the most.

②The work is worth our while/the trouble.

③The car isn't worth repairing.

(不能说…to repair,to be repaired或being repaired)

④ She's not worth getting angry with.

⑤ The article is well worth reading.

The car isn't worth being repaired.

【注】应该用well修饰 worth,不能用 quite,very或 very much等修饰worth,如句⑤。再如:It's well worth trying.(很值得一试。) It's very/quite worth trying.

①It isn't worth repairing the bike.= The bike isn't worth repairing.

②It isn't worth getting angry with her.= She's not worth getting angry with.

③It's worth visiting the park a second time.= The park is worth visiting a second time.

Don't get the box down. It isn't worth it 一句中, worth it =worth the trouble。

8.call on,call at,drop in,visit与 pay a visit to辨析

①I called on Dick at his office yesterday.

②Please call on me next time you come to Wuhan.

①We called at Prof Green's house last night.

②I called at his office as I was passing.

①Will you drop in on us tomorrow evening for a talk?

②He dropped in at our school yesterday.

①The foreign friends are visiting Shanghai.

5)pay a visit to意为“对……进行访问;去看望某人”。如:

①The Smiths paid a friendly visit to China last week.

9.pay back,pay for与pay off辨析

①Has he paid back the money he borrowed from the union last month?

①He has paid for the damage.

①Perrie has paid off all his debts.

Teaching plan IV for Integrating Skills

Procedures:

Step 1 Leading in (1 min)

Talk about the picture on P20. (When? Where? Who? Doing what?)

Step 2 Reading

Read the dialogue fast and answer some questions:

1. What are the teacher and the students talking about? ( About plays, TV programmes and computer games.)

2. Which does Tim prefer, watching plays or playing computer games?

3. What happens to the girl on her way to see her grandmother? Whom does the girl meet on her way to school?

Step 3 Reading aloud (5 mins)

1. Now listen to the tape and read aloud the dialogue, paying attention to the tones, stresses and intonations of the speakers.

2. Explain some language points and difficulties if they have.

1). Writing a short play is not that difficult.

Here the gerund phrase is used as a noun and treated as singular form. The word “that” in this

sentence is not a pronoun but an adverb for emphasis.

2). Besides, we have to start somewhere if we want to learn how to write plays.

Here, “Besides” is used as an adverb, meaning “in addition, what’s more”.

3). If we work together, we might come up with a very good story.

“come up with” is a very useful phrase meaning “think up (an idea, a plan)

e.g. He is such a smart boy that he can always come up with good ideas when we turn to him for help.

4). On her way to her grandmother’s she meets an alien who takes her in his spaceship.

The word “alien” here is used as a noun meaning a person from another country or planet. Besides, it can be used as an adjective, meaning “opposite”.

e.g. Their ideas are alien to our way of thinking.

Step 4 Talking and discussing (10 mins)

Talk about the procedures of writing a play:

1. Talk and decide what the action of the play should be.

2. Write an outline of the plot, including the setting (time, place, characters)

3. Write down the dialogue.

4. Decide which role each member will play.

5. Rehearse the play

6. Perform the play in front of the class.

In groups your are going to talk on the following topics:

1. Similarities and differences between TV shows and computer games.

(TV shows have plots. They tell stories just like a play. Computer games don’t really tell stories but they do have a beginning, middle, and end to their action, like plays and characters.)

2. Your different roles in life.

(The roles we play in life may be real or fake. We may act the way we trul6y think and feel or pretend to be someone we are not, just like an actor does. Often the role we play depends on our relationship to others, especially how we feel about them.)

3. Similarities and differences between life in reality and life on stage.

(Shakespeare once wrote, “All the world’s a stage.” If life is like theatre, then we are all actors on its stage. Some of us have big roles to play while others have small roles. But each role is important to the success of the play, just like in the real life. )

Step 5 Closing up by creating and acting short plays (25 mins)

Here is a short play as a sample, which involves a student who meets a girl on her way to school who looks exactly like her. Read it and then work in groups. Choose one of the three given prompts and create a play around it.

Li Dai: Qingming in Chinese means “clear and bright”. It is also called Tomb-Sweeping Day. It is a day for the living to show love and respect to dead friends, relatives and ancestors.

Louise: When is the day?

Li Dai: It comes on 4th or 5th April.

Shelly: I would just like to be a normal person. As far as I know, some talented people are strange. They may be good at one thing but not talented in other areas. For example, Einstein had a gift for physics but found it hard to communicate with others.

Eric: I'm willing to turn on such a “button” in my brain, if it really exists. I could become skilled at science, art or economics (经济). But I would make sure this “button” couldn't do me any harm before turning it on.

Marie: If more people became geniuses, it may lead to an increase in high-tech crime (犯罪), such as stealing money through the Internet and creating harmful computer viruses. It is hard to imagine what the world would be like if all the criminals were very clever.

Judy: In my opinion, such a “button” can do a lot of good. It may help us to develop our abilities so that we can make new discoveries. As a result, we could solve many problems and have a more comfortable life. If possible, I am eager to become a genius.

Helen: Although it is convenient, I don't think its right to become cleverer in this way. If someone wants to be successful in math or art, he or she should work hard. I believe success requires hard work as well as natural gifts.

Sam (teacher): Just imagine what it would be like to become a genius overnight. In my opinion, most of us would treasure such a chance to make our lives easy and interesting. However, at the same time, we should make good use of these abilities and contribute (贡献) to society and mankind.

Not knowing what was going to happen to me, or how rapidly the disease would develop, I was bored. The doctors told me to go back to Cambridge and carry on with the research. But I was not making much (1) . And, anyway, I might not live long enough to (2) my PhD.

My dreams at that time were rather (3) . Before my condition had been diagnosed(诊断), I had been very (4) with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I dreamt that I was going to be put to death. I suddenly (5) that there were a lot of meaningful things I could do if I (6) longer. Another dream that I had several times, was that I would give up my life to (7) others. After all, if I were going to die anyway, it might as well do some good. But I didn't die. In fact, although there was a cloud (8) over my future, I found to my surprise, that I was enjoying life in the present more than before. I began to make progress with my research, and I got (9) to a girl called Jane Wilde, who I had met just about the time my condition was diagnosed. That engagement changed my life. It gave me something to live for. But it also (10) that I had to get a job if we were to get married. I therefore applied for a research fellowship(奖学金)at Cambridge. To my great surprise, I got a fellowship, and we got married a few months later.

It was Christmas Day . On CNN, talk show host(节目主持人)Larry King was interviewing Stephen Hawking.

“What, professor, (1) you the most?” King asked. “What do you think about the most?”

Hawking immediately replied, “ (2) .”

It's a comfort to know that Hawking, one of the (3) men in the world, is puzzled by the opposite sex. But, that's not (4) , according to Satoshi Kanazawa. Bright people are (5) better than anyone else at making smart decisions in common things, he says. These (6) finding a mate, maintaining family relationships, raising children, finding the way home, and handling a variety of basic life needs.

That's (7) there are several kinds of formal “intelligence”, Kanazawa argues. Being smart one way does not (8) mean smart in another way. This view is (9) to be controversial(有争议的)among scientists who think about thinking. That is because it (10) with the common view that general intelligence is a single thing. In that view, it is not, as Kanazawa and others say, a set of (11) mental areas.

Kanazawa says that some kinds of intelligence developed slowly over time. Many people have heard about (12) is called “emotional intelligence”. Now, psychologists have discovered several (13) types of intelligence. These include the ability to learn a language, find a mate, recognize faces, and (14) oneself in a new environment.

But, is there evidence to (15) the theory that intelligence comes in many (16) ? Actually, there is quite a lot of evidence, Kanazawa says. If there were only one type of intelligence, he (17) , then people with (18) IQs should be “smart” in every way.

In one test, a psychologist took a group of subjects(受实验者)on a hike, walking into the forest. He then told them to find their way back. The high IQ people were no more likely to be able to find out (19) they were. In another experiment, a researcher asked people to find their way to a specific location in a computer maze(迷宫). (20) , high IQ did not give them any edge(优势).

A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家)

Dear Mr. Expert:

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine - so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes- it makes the place feel comfortable and warm- but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy (隐私)?

Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan

Dear Joan:

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛),you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with- or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”

1921: He won the Nobel Prize for physics.

P3, Part 3. Tell the students to read the first part text and tell what the bold parts refer to. Answers:

1.himself –Albert 2. it – to get along with the other boys

3.there – in Switzerland 4. that – the pay

5.Where – at university 6.one – the period between 1905 and 1915

7.which – research and studies 8.which – the peace

Step 8.Language points of the text:

1. When he was a young boy he used to ask lots of questions...

used to do sth.

When I was young, I used to have a lot more free time than I do now. I used to live near my work and would always get home early. Sometimes I would do a bit of gardening or go for a long walk.

注意句中的used to have和used to live表示持续的状态,不可用would,而和always及sometimes连用的would因为有表示频度的状语从而不能用used to替代。

(2) 与be used to doing sth.和be used to do sth.

be used to doing sth.意为“习惯于做某事”,be used to doing sth.意为“被用来干什么”,而used to do sth.

He used to bring me roses when he came to see me.

I'm used to doing jogging in the morning now.

Computers can be used to do a lot of work now.

2. By the time he was fourteen years old, he had learned maths all by himself.

I'm not myself today.

The emperor wished to see the cloth for himself.

The door opened of itself.

Bob has taught himself German for four years.

The little girl dare not stay at the lonely cottage by herself.

By the time he was fourteen years old, he knew he would become a scientist.

By the time he was fourteen years old, he had learned two thousand words.

By the end of last year, we had set up another two branches in this area.

By now, several bridges have been built over the Yangtze River.

By the end of this century, China will have become a more powerful country in the world.

3. All through his life Einstein was content to spend most of his time alone...

be well content 很满意

Are you content with your present salary?

She is always content with very little.

I should be well content to do so.

What do you think of the content of the film?

Can you calculate the content of the tube?

4. With the pay that he received and saved, he went on with his studies at university, where he received a doctor's degree in 1905.

That he received and saved修饰the pay, where he received a doctor's degree in 1905修饰university。

He gets his pay each Friday.

Success is often the pay for hard work.

(3) receive/win/get a doctor's degree, 意为“获得博士学位”,类似的结构有 receive/win/get a master's degree/a bachelor's degree,意为“获得硕士/学士学位”。

Mike received a doctor's degree of/in physics in Princeton University last semester.

5. ... he began the research and studies which led to his new discoveries in physics.

或 lead sb.to sth. 或lead sb. to do sth.。如:

All roads lead to Rome.

Hard work and proper ways will lead you to success.

What led you to believe him?

He has gone to India to do some research on the culture there.

The scientists have been researching into the cause of the AIDS.

6. He accepted the job of Professor of physics, but asked for very little money.

If this condition is acceptable to you, that's settled then.

Professor Smith's suggestion met with general acceptance.

7. He once refused to speak on the radio for $ 1,000 a minute. Another time someone saw him using a cheque for $ 1,500 as a bookmark.

1) for $ 1,000 a minute 意为“以每分钟1,000美元的价 格”,for在这里相当于 at the price of。又如:

The couple bought the house for $ 200,000.

They got the 51% of the shares of the company for100,000,000 dollars.

2) a cheque for 1,500注意介词for表示“代表”之意.

3) Once... Another time...

8. Besides his work in physics, he spent a lot of time working for human rights and progress.

except常和all, every, no, nothing, nobody等词连用,表示从整体中去除部分的关系。如:

Besides me, two more students were chosen to take part in the competition.

Everybody is here except Tom.

9. Such was Albert Einstein, a simple man and the 20th century's greatest scientist.

Such is the answer to the question.

Such are our products, much more advanced.

Grace has been to Hong Kong. So have I. 格雷斯去过香港。

So fresh is the air at the top of Mount Tai that we can't help taking a few deep breaths.

Step 9.Conclusion

T: By enjoying the novels by Jules, we can see science fiction is a type of book based on imagined scientific discoveries of the future, that is, it is often about things we believe may be possible in the far future, maybe a hundred years later.

Step 3. Speaking

T:①. Nowadays people are living a comfortable life. But I can’t imagine what life on earth will be like in the far future. Can you imagine it?

(Ask Ss to give their opinions.)

③. So space travel is a good way for us to have contract with outer space. Do you believe one day the creatures from outer space will visit our planet?

④. But it’s difficult for us to make some prediction about the future. Everything is changing. It’s likely that women can make their dream come true-Young forever.

(While talking with ss, the T places Life in 3098, Space travel, creature from outer space, young forever on the screen.)

T: Just now we mentioned the 4 things that may be possible in the future.Of course different people have different opinions. Some people may doubt whether science fiction may come true. Now it’s time for you to prepare dialouges about such topics. The dialogues are incomplete. Work with your partners to create a dialogue using some of the useful expressions for beliefs and doubts.

Period 2 Reading

Teaching Aims:

1.Learn and master the useful words and phrases.

2.Train the students’ reading ability.

3.Let the students learn about the French writer Jules Verne and his two famous science fictions.

Teaching Important Points:

1.Improve the students’ reading ability.

2.Master the useful phrases.

Teaching Difficult Points:

1.How to make the students understand the passage better.

1.Discussion before reading to make students learn more about some scientific facts.

2.Fast-reading method to get the general idea of the passage.

3.Careful-reading method to get the detailed information in the text.

4.Discussion after reading to help the students have a better understanding of the text.

Step 1 Revision and Lead in

Greet the whole class.

T:In the last period, we talked about some facts in the world. Now, let’s continue to learn more about scientific facts. Look at the pictures on the screen. (Show the following pictures on the multimedia.)

T:Here are three great inventions. Who can tell me when the inventions in the pictures were made?

S1:Electric railway was invented in the early years of the 20th century.

S2:Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879.

S3:Steam-powered boat was made in 1807.

T: You’re quite right. But sometimes we need to know the difference between fact and fantasy. Here’s a beautiful picture. I’d like to like in the palace very much. Do you like it?

Ss: Yes.

T: But now I don’t know whether it is possible for me to live in it. To me it is only a fantasy. In science fictions, you can always find a lot of fantasies. Today I’d like to introduce a famous writer to you. His name is Jules Verne. We call him the father of science fiction. Let’s enjoy a film first.

Step 2 Warming up

Show a video. Then ask the students “What did you see?”

Ss: A monster?”

T: Have you ever seen a monster?

Ss: No.

T: Maybe a monster is only a fantasy. But Verne combined fact with fantasy so naturally that we think it is true. Would like to know something more about him?

Ss: Yes.

Step 3 Fast reading

Read the passage fast and find the answers to the following questions.

1.When was Jules Verne born and when did he die?

Step 6 Further Understanding

Describe the character of Captain Nemo?

Captain Nemo is the kind of person of whom it is difficult to say whether you like or not. You may think he is hard and cruel, but he also has a soft and gentle side.

Step 7 Discussion

What can we learn from Jules Verne and his novels about fact and fantasy?

Why would there be a huge underground ocean in the centre of the earth?

Why do the characters find plants and animals that live on the earth millions of years ago?

Why would there be a boiling river inside the earth?

(In this part, it is very important to help the students know the relationship between fact and fantasy:

In fact, there can’t be a huge underground ocean or plants and animals that live on the earth millions of years ago. There might be a boiling river, but it is impossible for us to see it because we can not bear the heat. However, when we read the stories, few people will doubt whether whatever they see and do is possible. And we enjoy the stories. Fantasy is very important for us. Without fantasy, science can not develop so greatly. But fantasies should base on facts.)

Step 8 Homework

1.Finish the exercises on Page 13.

2.Imagine a journey to some place in the future and write a composition about it. Prepare a role card in groups of three first.

2.Finish the word study and grammar part on the workbook.

3.Prepare for the next period

Period 4 Integrating Skills

Goals:

1. Get the students to have a good understanding of the story of Frankenstein.

2. Help the students finish the creative writing.

Step1 Lead-in

In the last two periods, we have learnt much about science fiction and known more about science fiction and Jules Verne, the father of science fiction, who wrote many famous science fictions, such as 20,000 Leagues Under the sea, Around the World in 80 Days, Journey to the Center of the World…He combined fact with fantasy cleverly. Now we’re going to read another passage about science fiction, whose title is the Story of Dr Frankenstein.

Step2 Background

Dr Frankenstein is a fictitious scientist portrayed by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly, who was Shelly’s wife. She was honored as a pioneer of the science fiction (genre). Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft (1797-1851), English novelist. Daughter of the British philosopher William Godwin and the British author and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, she was born in London, and privately educated. She met the young poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in May 1814, and two months later left England with him. When Shelley's first wife died in December 1816, he married Mary. In 1818 her first and most important work, the novel Frankenstein was published. A remarkable accomplishment for a 20-year-old, the work was an immediate critical and popular success. Repeatedly dramatized for both the theater and motion pictures, this tale of Frankenstein, a student of the occult, and the subhuman monster he assembles from parts of human corpses added a new word to the English language: A “Frankenstein” is any creation that ultimately destroys its creator. No other work by Mary Shelley achieved the popularity or excellence of this first work, although she wrote four other novels, books of travel sketches, and miscellaneous tales and verse. One of her novels, The Last Man(1826), reveals her liberal social outlook; another of her books, Lodore (1835), is a novelized autobiography.

Step3 Skimming

Read the passage as quickly as possible, and answer the following question:

What did Dr Frankenstein create at last?

( He had planned to create a larger human being but at last it turned out a living horror.)

Step4 Scanning

Now please read the text again and discuss :

How many periods can Dr Frankenstein’s experiment be divided?

(Three periods.)

Period 1 (Paragraph 1------Paragraph 3) He decided to crate life from dead matter.

Period 2 (Paragraph 4------Paragraph 5) He decided to create a larger human being than man

Period 3 (Paragraph 6------Paragraph 7) He succeeded in creating a creature, but a living horror.

Step 5 Detail Reading

Read each period again and answer the following questions :

Period 1

Paragraph 1

What did Dr Frankenstein want to do when he was young.?

( He wanted to learn the secrets of heaven and earth when he was young.)

Paragraph 2

After he was sent to university, what did he think of the thing taught at university?

( He felt very disappointed and decided to pioneer a new way himself.)

Paragraph 3

What attracted his attention?

( The structure of the human body and any animal that was alive attracted his attention.)

What did he discover?

(He discovered the cause of life and how to create life from dead matter.)

Period 2

Paragraph 4

Although he knew how to create life, what remained a difficult work for him?

( How to prepare a body for it with all its muscles and organs still remained a difficult job for him.)

Paragraph 5

Why did he decide to create a larger human being than man about eight feet in height?

(Because the small size of the parts slowed down his speed.)

Period 3

Paragraph 6

How did he create a life form that looks like a human being? Please rearrange the following steps in the right order.

1. He gained many materials from butcher shops and hospitals.

2. He finished his work on a night in November.

3. The dead creature came to life at one in the morning.

4. He lighted the flame of life into the dead thing.

5. He collected bones from graves and cut up dead bodies.

(the right order: 5---1---2---4---3)

Paragraph 7

What did the creature look like?

(He got black hair, white teeth, yellow skin, black lips and strange sounds. He looked like a terrible monster.)

What did Dr Frankenstein think of the creature?

( While unfinished, he was ugly but now he was a living horror.)

Step 6 Appreciation

As this passage is a very famous science fiction, there must be a lot of good sentences we can learn. Please discuss the following sentences with each other. Later we’ll appreciate them together.

1. My father was not scientific, so I had to look for a road without having a map.

(Dr Frankenstein used a metaphor in the so-clause. He compared the road without any instructions to that without having a map in order to show he had to work hard to find a way to science by himself.)

2. I read all the books I could find that threw light upon these matters.

( “throw light upon” means “make…clear”. Here is another metaphor. He compared books to lights.)

3. While unfinished, he was ugly, but now he was a living horror.

( The sentence “while unfinished” is equal to “while he was unfinished”)

Step7 Video Enjoyment

Watch the video. Let’s get a good understanding of Dr Frankenstein’s experiment.

Step 8 Post-reading

What’s the end of the story?

What happened to Dr Frankenstein?

After the Monster came to life, he began to live with common people. But his terrible appearance and behavior terrified the other people. He couldn’t get along well with them, and couldn’t live a happy life. He was eager to get the caring and friendship from others, but he failed, so he felt very lonely. Then he begged Dr Frankenstein to create another creature to accompany him, but was refused. Therefore, he took revenge on Dr Frankenstein, who gave life to him, making Dr Frankenstein’s family broken up, some gone away, some dead.

“Farewell! I leave you, and in you the last of humankind whom these eyes will ever behold. Farewell, Frankenstein! If thou were yet alive and yet cherished a desire of revenge against me, it would be better satiated in my life than in my destruction. But it was not so; thou didst seek my extinction, that I might not cause greater wretchedness; and if yet, in some mode unknown to me, thou hadst not ceased to think and feel, thou wouldst not desire against me a vengeance greater than that which I feel. Blasted as thou wert, my agony was still superior to thine, for the bitter sting of remorse will not cease to rankle in my wounds until death shall close them forever.

”But soon,“ he cried with sad and solemn enthusiasm, ”I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt. Soon these burning miseries will be extinct. I shall ascend my funeral pile triumphantly and exult in the agony of the torturing flames. The light of that conflagration will fade away; my ashes will be swept into the sea by the winds. My spirit will sleep in peace, or if it thinks, it will not surely think thus. Farewell.“

He sprang from the cabin window as he said this, upon the ice raft which lay close to the vessel. He was soon borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance.

篇10:languagepoints in unit5(新课标版高二英语教案教学设计)

Background knowledge:

*A* Probably you have learned the names of “the British Isles” “ Great British” “the United Kingdom” “England” and “the British Commonwealth”, which have roughly the same meaning.

The British Isles refer to the main islands and several thousand small ones as well, which you can see on the map. Great Britain or Britain refers to the larger of the two main islands. But this word “Britain” is often used as a short form for the United Kingdom or you call it the O.k..

England refers simply to the largest of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the name of the state and is the official name of the country.

Finally, the British Commonwealth is the present name for what is left of the British Empire and the rising tide of national liberation movement throughout the world.

*B*Being not far from the sea, London is famous for its fogs(雾). The worst of them happened on December 4, 1952. All movement in the town came to a stop. It was almost impossible to drive or ride in anything. The streets which led into the centre were filled with buses that moved two miles an hour. Soon, however, the traffic was stopped. Being left by their drivers, the buses and cars stood empty in the streets. Many who usually traveled by bus took underground. But there were so many people there that the gates had to be closed. Being caught in the fog, people felt their way along the walls of houses with one hand, which they put out the other in front of them so as not to knock against something or somebody.

At the Opera House they got through the first act(幕) of La Traviata before so much fog had spread(蔓延) into the building that the singers could not see the conductor.

It was a terrible fog, indeed, and as many as 4000 people in London lost their lives.

In British English, the word “bathroom” means a place where there is a bath or shower and sometimes also a toilet. Joe wants to go to the toilet, but Nancy thinks he wants to take a shower.

V. Language points

1. Oh, there you are. Now then, did you have a good flight?

(1) There you are.

Tom is here.

Here’s Tom.

因此,此处there you are翻译为“你来了”较为妥当

There you are! Then let’s have some coffee.

There you are! I knew we should find it at last.

Now then, what are you boys doing in my garden?

2. You must be very tired.

A: That must be the Williams.

B: No, it can’t be them. They are away on holidays.

3. Why of course.

4. make yourself at home

be / feel at home与make oneself at home中的at home意思是“好象在自己家里一样无拘无束”。又如:

a. Our hostess made us all feel quite at home.
