lesson 课文

set up an interview: choose a place and time for the interview.

can we set up an interview for next friday?

step one: name, address, and phone

first, learn how to write your home address in english. then, at the top of the paper, in the center, write your english name first, as foreign interviewers are much more likely to remember an english name, and a resume's main purpose to get you recognized. under your name, write your address, your date of birth (dob), facsimile number (fax), and most importantly, your telephone number (tel). nine out of ten employers will contact you by telephone to set up an interview.

example:

john doe

123 anywhere st., apartment #23

haidian, beijing 100872

telephone: (8610) 6251-1257

fax: (8610) 6251-1333

john doe

123 anywhere st., apartment #23

haidian, beijing 100872

telephone: (8610) 6251-1257

fax: (8610) 6251-1333

step two: write three clear objectives --what are your goals? what kind of job are you searching for? (write three different sentences) show the three sentences to two smart and honest friends. then, all together, choose what you think is the best sentence to be your objective.

example:

objective 1): to find a good job using computers. (bad objective)

objective 2): to find an active position, using my refined computer and communication skills. (better)

objective 3) to assist in developing and testing new and innovative computer software. (best bet)

objective 1): to find a good job using computers. (bad objective)

objective 2): to find an active position, using my refined computer and communication skills. (better)

objective 3) to assist in developing and testing new and innovative computer software. (best bet)

step three: list, by date, your schools of education and the degrees you earned there. it is important to list them beginning with the most recent and then move backward. if your highest degree is a masters degree, you want to write that first. along with each school you attended, you should

write a short sentence describing some special activities of your education.

example:

education:

-6: attended the people's university of china. was awarded with a master's degree in economics. was also head of the economics department's student club and won a special academic achievement award in 1993.

1991-1995: attended beijing university. was awarded with a bachelor's degree in economics. special activities included serving as editor at the student newspaper and head of the university chess club.

B: Yes, it’s in high gear.

1. Hey, don't try to rip me off. I know what this is worth.

如:“ The shop tried to rip me off, but I taught them a good lesson.

如果真的被狠宰了一下,你当然还可以说,“ I was ripped off .”或者“ I was cleaned out”。

2. Can you give me a little deal on this?

Can you give me this for cheaper?

3. Is there any discount on bulk purchases?

Give me a discount.

“Bulk purchases”就是“大量地购买”,等于“buy something in bulk”。

A: How long will it take for our order to be delivered?

B: Let's see. You are importing fifty containers of textiles from China. They should be able to place your order before the end of next week. It will take 2 days for shipping to the port city of Ningbo. The freight will take 3 weeks on the open ocean and will arrive in Los Angeles approximately a month from today. Domestic shipping will be your responsibility, you can make arrangements with the pier in Los Angeles.

A: Fine, we will handle domestic shipping, but what about customs? Will we have to pay tariff on our imports? I hope we don't run into any problems with the border control.

B: No, the Chinese company has that all worked out. With the paperwork you receive with the shipment, you should be good to go.

B:No, sir. The plant expansion project has been delayed. There was a snag up in the filng process to get the neccessary construction permits. It seems that the property we were slated to build on is also habitat for some endangered indigenous species.

A:You're joking, right? No wonder we've been tied up with this project. I know the environmental impact statement will take forever to get approval if they've found anything endangered on the site. Are they positive there is evidence of endangered species actually living there?

B: The environmental review board has a team on it now.Hopefully we'll know more by the end of the week.

Part 1 Introduction

1sttime greetings: How are you? / How do you do? Happyto meet you. / Nice to meet you. / Pleased to meet you. / Glad to meet you. /It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m excited to meet you. / I’m delighted to meetyou (more commonly used by women)

2ndtime greetings: How are you? / Good to see youagain. / Great to see you again. / How are you doing? / How’s everything? /How’s it going?

1stperson introductions: Hi, I’m… / Hello, my name is…

3rdperson introductions: Let me introduce you to … /I’d like to introduce you to… / I’d like you to meet… / This is… (usually usedto introduce peers, subordinates, or casual acquaintances)

Part 2 Usage

How are you?

I’m good/I’m fine, thank you.

I’m happy to meet you.

I’m glad/happy to meet you too.

It’s a pleasure to meet you.

The pleasure’s all mine.

How are you doing?

I’m doing fine/well/very well, thank you.

some managers say that the sales department is the most important. without the sales department there would not be any sales. without sales, the company would not have any income and could not pay its expenses.

the sales department often has the most staff of all of the departments in a company. sales staff sometimes sit at a desk and make calls to customers and potential customers while others go out of the office to visit existing customers or find new ones.

sales staff usually work on a commission basis. this means that they get a salary (sometimes called a retainer) and then get a small percentage of the sales that they make. this gives sales staff plenty of motivation to make as many sales as possible.

sales staff must know the product or service that they are selling very well. they need to know all of the features and benefits of the product or service so that they can talk about it with customers and answer the customer's questions fully.

some people think that it is ok for sales staff to tell lies to make a sale. most professional sales staff know that it's not good to lie, because once the customer finds out, they won't stay a customer for long!

present tense dialogue(现在时对话)

beth: i have always wanted to work in our sales department.

sally: have you ever mentioned this to the sales manager?

beth: no. i have never had enough courage to speak with him.

sally: sales staff must be able to talk to anyone without getting nervous. why do you think you would be good in sales?

beth: because i know our company products really well and i think i could sell them.

sally: but do you have a silver tongue?

beth: not really, but i think i could learn.

sally: i don't like the idea of getting paid commission. i like to know how much i will earn each month.

beth: maybe you are right and i should just stick with human resources.

sally: at least if you stay in this department we can still study english together!

A: For our lunch meeting with the investors, do we have to make a reservation at the restaurant or do we just show up?

B: Usually for lunch, we don't have to reserve a table, they should allow walk-ins. But to be on the safe side, I'll order a table for half-past twelve. Will that suit your schedule?

A: I've arranged to meet them at the restaurant at twelve. Can you make the reservation a little earlier? If we start earlier, it will give us more time for a longer lunch.

B: Are you planning on treating the investors to a full-course meal?

A: Yes, we'll start with appetizers, follow with a soup and salad course, then main dishes of prime rib or cordon bleu chicken, and finish up with a delicious rich dessert of some sort.

B: That'll be pretty heavy for a mid-day meal, don't you think?

A: As along as we stay away from anything alcoholic, we should be okay.

B: With your prime rib and chicken choices, you'd better hope nobody's vegetarian.

A: We can make some special arrangement if we need to. After all, it's the company who is footing the bill.
